An estimated 100 South Tipperary people were part of a crowd of close to 4000, who took part in an anti-pylons and windfarm protest outside Dail Eireann last week.

They represented residents action groups across the county opposed to Eirgrid’s proposed Gridlink power line that may be routed through their communities.

Fifty-seven people from Ballypatrick, Faugheen, Kilcash, Ballyneale and other surrounding communities where possible Gridlink pylon routes pass through travelled by bus to Dublin for the protest on Tuesday, April 15.

The bus was organised by the Suir Valley Action Group and Faugheen Against Pylon Action Group.

Declan Blanchfield of the Suir Valley Action Group, who attended the demonstration, estimated that about 50 other people from South Tipperary took part in the demonstration that began at Parnell Square and ended at the gates of the Dail.

Mr Blanchfield who lives close to one of the possible Gridlink routes near Ballyneale, said our landscape is world renowned but it will be ruined with pylons if Eirgrid’s plans go ahead.

Labour Senator Denis Landy and Independent TD Seamus Healy were among a number of public representatives from Tipperary and Waterford, who took part in the protest.

The demonstration was organised by Wind Aware Ireland, a new organisation bringing together groups who are in opposition to pylons, wind farms and overhead power cables.

The protest was organised ahead of the local and European elections in May to keep the issue high on the political agenda.
