Campaigner urges ‘keep it individual’

Campaigners against plans to site four wind turbines at Gorpley, above Bacup Road, are urging objectors, some who may have already submitted their views, to make sure they do so individually.

Steve Bottomley, one of the residents opposing the plans, said: “You can submit these in writing up to the May 7 hearing date but do so individually. If a letter has been sent with several names on it will only be treated as one objection,” he said.

The proposals, which would see four 125m turbines sited at land owned by Yorkshire Water, which is owned by Kelda Water Group, are necessary to allow the company to generate more of its own power in an eco-friendly way, which would help reduce customers’ bills, it says.

To reduce its energy bill, the company uses a range of renewable energy generation methods including anaerobic digestion, hydro, wind and solar, it says.

Campaigners say they have concerns – shared by groups like the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust – about the destruction of the peat bog caused by development, about noise and light pollution and that the moorland would be over-developed if any more turbines were allowed in the area.

Turbines of similar height already erected as part of approved Coronation Power schemes show how visually intrusive they are, said Mr Bottomley.

Details about how to make a representation in opposition or in support, and about the plan itself, can be found on Calderdale Council’s website – log on to www.calderdale.gov.uk.

The planning application number is 14/00126/WDF.
