Fishermen’s Energy appeals wind farm rejection

ATLANTIC CITY – The company that proposed a $188 million wind farm off of the New Jersey coast has asked the state to reconsider.

Fishermen’s Energy filed the motion with the state Board of Public Utilities on April 7.

The state misread the record, which meets the standard for reconsideration, said Fishermen’s CEO Chris Wissemann in a news release.

“The standard for review for such a motion is to show that board’s decision has a ‘palpably incorrect or irrational basis’,” he said.

Fishermen’s plan would have installed five turbines with a combined capacity of 25 megawatts off South Jersey.

Atlantic City had issued an easement for the project in 2011.

But on March 19 the board decided the project held too much risk of soaring electric bills for ratepayers.

It said the project depended on a mixture of subsidies and federal grants to make sure ratepayers didn’t get stuck with sky-high bills.

The board said Fishermen’s price of $263 per megawatt hour was too high.

In a release Tuesday the company said the proposed rate was $199.17 per megawatt hour.

The board’s next meeting is April 23.
