Wind farm row breaks out between ACT and NSW politicians

State and Federal politicians from NSW say they’re up in arms about the ACT Government’s plan to source renewable energy from wind farms across the border.

The ACT Government wants to source 200 megawatts of power from turbines on the NSW southern tablelands, in its bid to reach a 90 per cent renewable energy target for Canberra within the next six years.

Federal Liberal Member for Hume, Angus Taylor, says the cost of that electricity would be far too high.

“They will need to buy electricity from generators at three times the cost of conventional,” he said.

“I got that number not only from the ACT material and on top of that I heard it from one of the wind generators yesterday, so that is what they’re going to have to pay.”

Professor Andrew Blakers, from the Australian National University’s Centre for Sustainable Energy Systems, says renewable energy isn’t more expensive.

“I mean, this is nonsense. Why would these wind generator companies build the machines if the economics were so bad,” he said.

“And this is a radical change from just a few years ago, driven by the enormous reduction in the cost of solar electricity over the last four years.”
