New group fights wind farm

A protest group is to be formed in Camelford next week to oppose plans for a massive wind farm at Davidstow airfield. A group of residents from the Davidstow area wants to register objections to the scheme, which would constitute the largest wind farm in Cornwall.
They are calling for other people who have concerns about the scheme to form a committee to fight it.
Under the proposals, a cluster of 20 wind turbines, each 414ft high, will be built at the former RAF airfield at Davidstow.
They are designed to generate a total of 50MW of energy, enough to power 28,000 homes, according to the firm behind the scheme, Cheshire-based Community Power.
But local people are concerned that, because of the scale of the project, the Government has the power to overrule local opposition.
Dave Rothwell, who is spearheading the protest group, said: “As soon as you have a 50MW output, the Government has the right to overrule any local opposition.
“The majority of people in our area don’t want them, so we have to do something.”
The campaign group will hold its first meeting in Camelford next Monday.
It will be the third anti-wind farm group to be formed in the North Cornwall district, following in the footsteps of the Group Against Windfarm Proliferation (GAWP) and Morwenstow Against Turbines (MAT).
The working title for the new group is Roughtor Amenity Preservation Against Windfarms, but ideas are welcome at the meeting.
Mr Rothwell said the purpose of the meeting was to form a committee and appoint officers, agree on a name for the group and outline an action plan. He said: “Since we started looking into this we have had a big response from people in the area.
“We are expecting the meeting to be very busy.”
He added that the group aimed to work closely with other anti-wind farm groups in the area to present a united front of opposition.
“We want to work closely with GAWP and other groups, as they have a lot of information about these developments, and we want to work together to oppose these projects,” he said.
* The meeting will take place on Monday, August 13, at 7.30pm, at the Clease Hall in Camelford.
