Wind turbine developers eye Southside

CORPUS CHRISTI -Imaging buying your dream home south of town only to have a wind turbine spring up nearby.

It’s a dream some developers consider a nightmare and they’re working to make sure it doesn’t come true.

A private trust is pushing to install a windfarm on a swath of private land out in Chapman Ranch, just outside the city limits.

And business leaders – especially developers – say if wind turbines move in, development will move out.

Homebuilder Bart Braselton briefed area business leaders today and told KRIS-6 news the problem.

“The most important concern is the future of our city,” he said. “We only have one direction to grow and it’s directly in the path of this windfarm. And windfarms tend to block growth and economic development.”

The wind farm would be on land owned by a private trust with private funding.

There isn’t a lot of detail other than that it could go somewhere between Chapman Ranch Road and Staples.

But there is enough of a concern for home builders and business owners to begin working with the Corpus Christi Chamber of Commerce to try and block any proposals.

South Texas has a lot of wind to go with its land. And wind can harness a lot of things, including a growing demand for power.

But County Commissioner Joe McComb says Southside land is not the right place.

“This needs to be left for the growth of the community and not for wind generation,” he said today.
