The Cherokee County Board of Education received an update on the Shinbone Wind Energy project Tuesday night from Patrick Buckley from Pioneer Green Energy.

Buckley says when the project was in the planning stages, there was discussion about putting a smaller-scale wind turbine in the classroom at the Cherokee County Career and Technology Center.

He also gave an update on that effort.

Buckley added that the an Economic Benefits Analysis from Jacksonville State University showed that the wind energy project could bring in between 200-thousand and 300-thousand dollars a year for the local economy.

The school system would get 53-percent of that tax revenue.

In addition, Pioneer Green Energy is not seeking a tax abatement, which will further benefit the schools.

In other action during Tuesday’s Cherokee County Board of Education meeting, Superintendent Mitchell Guice read a proclamation designating February as “Career and Technical Education Month.”

The next board of education meeting is set for 6 p.m. on February the 18th at Cherokee County High School.
