The energy company that wants to put 23 wind turbines in central New Hampshire that would be visible from Cardigan Mountain in Grafton County needs more time to complete an application for the project, according to a letter written to state regulators.
Iberdrola Renewables has proposed the Wild Meadows wind energy project in Danbury and Alexandria.
On Jan. 13, the state’s Site Evaluation Committee said the company’s application was incomplete because, among other things, it didn’t contain the results of an ongoing study into the effect the turbines would have on birds and bats.
The application also didn’t detail the effect on historical resources, recognize the fire marshal as the agency with jurisdiction over the plant or address a question about a conservation easement on land known as the Patten Brook parcel.
Iberdrola Renewables also operates a similar wind farm in Lempster and is bringing a 24-unit farm online in Groton. Wild Meadows calls for 23 turbines, each 492 feet tall. State officials look at such projects as important steps toward generating 25 percent of the state’s energy from renewable sources by 2025.
The company had 10 days to update the information without resubmitting the entire application. In a letter dated Thursday, it said it would miss the deadline.
The SEC will allow Iberdrola to submit the existing application again with “clearly identified insertions” that include the requested information.
The project is opposed by some groups that say wind power is not an economical answer to the region’s power challenges and will mar the state’s natural beauty and hurt tourism.
The Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests had asked the SEC to delay reviewing the project until new regulations are drafted that dictate where and how energy projects are built. Those new rules are due next year. The SEC denied the society’s request.
