Storm rising over wind farm plans

Protesters from Manor Kilbride converged on Wicklow County Council on Friday, November 22 to show their disapproval to the erection of wind turbines in their area.

An application was submitted to Wicklow County Council on November 8 for the construction of nine turbines on Butter Mountain, and residents of the area turned out with banners and pickets to appose this move.

‘This part of the county has been designated as an area of outstanding natural beauty,’ said Manor Kilbride resident John Kelly. ‘Also, these turbines will lead to a loss of value in our properties, which we are very much apposed to.’

The protests coincided with a special meeting of Wicklow County Council on permitting members of the public to make submissions about possible amendments to the County Development Plan. This came in the wake of renewed fears of wind farm and pylon construction at sites across Wicklow. Members of the public can make submissions about this proposed wind farm until December 12 and a decision will be taken on January 11.
