MP leads campaign to block wind turbines in the Redcar area

Campaigners opposed to a planning application for a wind turbine on a farm on the outskirts of a village have been joined by their local MP during a protest today (Monday, November 18).
A planning application to build a 78m-high turbine on land south-east of Turners Arm Farm in Yearby, near Redcar, has been received by Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council.
The turbine would be about 700 metres from the nearest home and protesters are also unhappy it would be too close to a new crematorium.
Redcar MP Ian Swales joined concerned residents as they attempt to block the application.
He said: “Today I met with residents in Yearby who are campaigning against the proposed turbine to the East of the village, and only this morning I found out about two more turbines are to be proposed for the West of the village.
“These turbines, if passed, would stand at 140m high- that’s bigger than the offshore ones at Redcar and the London Eye. These developments are completely inappropriate in that they are much too close to conservation villages such as Wilton, Yearby and Kirkleatham and sit right on the green wedge to the south of Redcar.”
The company behind the application, Airvolution Energy Limited, is holding an open day next week to explain to residents their plans.
Representatives from the company, which is also proposing to erect a turbine on land at nearby Wilton, will be at Lazenby Village Hall, High Street, Lazenby, on Wednesday November 27 from 1pm to 7pm.
Alison Hood, communications manager for the company, said: “A range of experts within the project team will be available to explain what we are considering and to answer any questions.
“We will display information about our proposals, and show what the turbines would look like from various viewpoints.”
