Navitus Bay wind farm plan to be debated in House of Commons

The debate over the planned wind farm off the Dorset coast will be taken to Parliament next week.
Poole MP, Robert Syms, has secured a debate on the proposed Navitus Bay Wind Farm Development in the House of Commons as arguments continue to rage over the plans.
The debate will be held in Westminster Hall on Tuesday at 4pm and will be replied to by a government minister.
Mr Syms said: “I want to take this opportunity to raise the concerns of my constituents about this proposed project.”
Earlier this week, East Dorset Friends of the Earth reiterated its support for the wind farm following the end of the final consultation period.
NBDL is due to submit a planning application to the Government next year for the project which could see up to 218 turbines constructed.
There has been vigorous opposition to the development, notably from the Challenge Navitus Group, as well as major concerns raised by councils – including from Bournemouth’s tourism boss, Mark Smith.
Worries have also been raised over the effects on marine life, shipping and bird migration routes, as well as the visual impact.
NBDL project director, Mike Unsworth, said: “We welcome the news that Robert Syms has secured a debate in Parliament about the proposed Navitus Bay Wind Park.
“We hope that it will be a balanced discussion, addressing both the economic and environmental benefits that the project will bring.
“We’ve always been open and honest with parliamentarians, and indeed the wider community, about our plans, and since the start of the project have provided them with comprehensive information about the project.
“Earlier this month we held a reception in Parliament, demonstrating our commitment to engaging with parliamentarians openly and transparently.”
