450 years to recoup cost of wind turbine

It could take 450 years to recoup the cost of a £48,000 wind turbine installed at the Welsh Government offices in Aberystwyth, (pictured), according to a Freedom of Information request.

Ceredigion MP Mark Williams has expressed deep concern that the 60-foot turbine has been producing such a small amount of electricity, and that it was incorrectly placed.

It is believed that the turbine was working at only quarter capacity until the start of 2013,generating just £5.28 worth of electricity per month.A Freedom of Information request has revealed that it is now operating at 68 per cent of capacity, generating around £9 worth of energy per month.

But it would still take more than 450 years for its purchase and in-stallation costs to be recovered. The turbine’s manufacturers, London-based Quiet Revolution, have claimed that the main reason for its poor performance is its location.

Mr Williams said: “I am very disappointed to learn that the wind turbine has been incorrectly placed.

“The result of this has been an enormous waste of money, for what appears now to have simply been a tokenistic gesture.”
