Peru needs better wind bylaws

The Berkshire Eagle’s Nov. 6 editorial on the proposed Peru wind project was off the mark. A clear majority voted for the wind moratorium indicating Peru’s voters want updated wind bylaws.
Many towns have passed or are in the process of passing updated bylaws or moratoriums so that the people in the town can determine its future rather than leave it in the hands of an industrial developer. The current outdated bylaws guarantee maximum profit and minimal risk to the developer, alongside maximum risk and property value loss to the town and its residents. They are neither up-to-date nor “best practice” in terms of siting, noise limits, financial renumeration and many other issues.
Peru is a beautiful place, with dark, quiet skies and abundant wildlife. Its people are generous and care about the town, but I fear that some may either believe everything the developer promises or may not really understand the devastating consequences of industrial wind without appropriate regulations.
It will be to the detriment of all if better bylaws are not established.
