Turbine will blight Shropshire border hill – protesters

A planned wind turbine will blight one of the last unspoilt areas of Shropshire, residents have claimed.

Farmer Phil Hughes, of Hargreaves Farm, Halfway House, is applying to install a 150ft high turbine on Long Mountain – midway between Shrewsbury and Welshpool.

But residents say the turbine, planned for the summit of the hill above Vron Gate, will be visible for miles around and blight the area.

A public meeting to discuss the plans takes place at Westbury Village Hall at 7pm tonight.

Iain Wright, who lives a mile from the proposed site, said: “There has been no advance warning of the installation and no consultation. It came as a complete surprise to us all.

“We are now running as fast as we can to mobilise the local community, to convince them that it is worth making an objection if that is how they feel about this and advising them on how to do it to best effect.

“My major objection is to the change to the visual environment. I know there are a number of turbines already in the area but they do not break the skyline of a major hill. This one does.”

In his application form, Mr Hughes states the turbine will be on land currently used for agriculture.

According to submitted maps, it would be visible from as far away as Maesbury Marsh to the north, the Stiperstones to the south and Shrewsbury to the east.
