Wind farm plan in Grey Highlands

Some guidelines for wind farms in Grey Highlands.

The municipality has been working with landscape architects from the University of Guelph to develop guidelines about where giant wind turbines can be located.

Professor Robert Corry – who worked on the study – says they have used the guidelines to develop a comprehensive zoning plan.

In the plan – the municipality is divided into three distinct areas.

Corry says the zones include areas that should not have wind farms because they would conflict with the scenic value.

He notes there are also areas designated environmentally sensitive to towers and require an environmental assessment and areas that are suitable for wind generators.

Corry says spots near major roads, scenic viewpoints and residential areas are typically not suitable for wind farms.

Corry adds since the development of the zoning plan – other Ontario rural municipalities have turned to Grey Highlands for help.
