EirGrid’s high power line ‘to facilitate proliferation of wind farms’, Cllr claims

The high voltage powerline planned by EirGrid across Cork, Waterford, Wexford and Kildare is being done in such a way as to facilitate the proliferation of wind farms. That’s the contention of Lismore Town Councillor Bernard Leddy who pointed out at the members recent monthly meeting that “it’s not going in a straight line.”

Cllr John Heneghan said that 10-12 years ago they were in there objecting to masts being erected. “We have to buy into the notion of clean energy,” he said.

Cllr Leddy said wind turbines are running out of favour in Canada and other countries where they were once championed. Other sources of so-called clean energy such as hydro power had also been looked at, Cllr Leddy commented.

The discussion petered out at that stage, as the meeting was coming to a close, the consensus being that it was a big subject, worthy of further discussion at another time.
