No turbines beside studs

The company behind plans to build 750 turbines across the midlands has pledged there will be no wind farms built immediately adjacent to studs.

Speaking to the media at a briefing at Lisheen wind farm in Co. Tipperary last week, Element Power Greenwire Development Manager, Kevin Hayes said the planning application would be submitted mid 2014.

He said the exact location of the turbines would be decided prior to that, so members of the public could be informed on those locations prior to the application being lodged.

“We are not planning to put any turbines immediately adjacent to stud farms in Kildare,” he stressed.

However, he was keen to point out that there is no evidence to suggest there are any problems with stud farms located near turbines throughout the world.

When asked why the midland turbines will be 185m – 45m higher than those at Lisheen – he said fewer turbines would be required to produce the same amount of electricity.

He also pointed out two landowners, who had objected to the first phase of Lisheen, actually applied for a turbine in phase 2.

Concerns about the affect turbines could pose to the horse industry have been expressed by the Irish Thoroughbred Breeders Association (ITBA) and action group, Kildare V Spin. The latter have called for an independent study to be ordered by government.
