Wind turbines at Chelker Reservoir are taken down

The panorama around Chelker Reservoir has taken on a new look.

Utility company Kelda has removed four old 45-metre-high wind turbines which had stood on the site between Addingham and Draughton for the past two decades.

The work comes after Kelda made unsuccessful attempts to obtain planning permission for much larger turbines.

“The site looks incredible without the turbines,” said objector Catherine Leigh, who lives at nearby East Berwick Farm.”

Mrs Leigh, who is a member of Parishioners Against Chelker Turbines (PACT), added: “It’s been a David and Goliath battle. Seeing the turbines come down made me realise that sometimes the little people do win the battle.”

A spokesman for Kelda said the above-ground works had been completed and the remaining materials including access tracks, would be removed in the spring when conditions were more favourable.
