Groups unite to fight against wind turbines appeal

The den Brook Valley Action Group has announced the Campaign to Protect Rural England and the Dartmoor Preservation Association have joined forces to fight a wind turbine project.The announcement was made last week, in an effort to fight the appeal from Renewable Energy Systems to build nine wind turbines in West Devon.
Action group chairman Maureen Thomas said: “We are absolutely delighted that the CPRE and DPA have joined us for the inquiry. We will make a formidable team. Working together will give us real strength and depth so we can present the inquiry with a co-ordinated and well-argued demonstration of why RES must not be allowed to destroy this beautiful valley.”
The plans were refused consent by the West Devon Borough Council in January and will now be heard at a public inquiry in Okehampton in November. RES project manager Rachel Ruffle said: “We have considered carefully the reasons for the council’s refusal and listened to the views of the local people and we can only conclude that the council’s decision was flawed.
“We are confident that an examination of the facts about this project, at a public inquiry, will conclude that it is a well-designed project that will help the region meet its renewable energy targets and should, on balance, be allowed to go ahead.”
The action group has also launched an appeal for donations towards the cost of a legal team to present their case at the inquiry.
Group fundraiser Nick Jewell said: “The overwhelming strength of local feeling was shown by the staggering 3000 letters of objection to the RES planning application received by West Devon Borough Council. This is now the final and crucial stage. It is essential that we have a very strong legal and expert team, so we are asking for their help.”
