People across Allerdale will be given the chance to have their say on the future of wind energy in Cumbria.
Allerdale councillors have agreed to send a paper, detailing the planning regulations governing the development of wind farms, to public consultation.
The discussions come at a time when several controversial wind farms are being planned across the county.
There is fierce opposition to plans for a meteorological mast on Tallentire Hill, near Cockermouth, and residents of Bothel, Silloth and Allonby are fighting similar applications.
The regulations in the paper aim to strike a balance between protecting the local environment and ensuring there is scope to make a positive contribution to the effects of climate change.
The paper will be available to interested parties who will be able to discuss the contents and suggest potential amendments.
Comments will then be noted and returned to the council for consideration.
Offshore windfarms will be covered by a different set of regulations.
Craig Baker, from Gilcrux, has been fighting the Tallentire Hill application and feels that the erection of too many windfarms will have a negative impact on the blossoming tourist industry in west Cumbria by destroying the landscape.
He feels that new planning regulations should concentrate on the collective effect that a number of windfarms would have on an area.
The paper will give guidance to planners.
