More time to comment on wind farm

San Bernardino County has pushed back the deadline for the public to weigh in on a proposed wind farm near Apple Valley.
Under the proposal, the Granite Mountain Wind Energy Project would be constructed 11 miles east of Apple Valley in the Granite Mountains.
Up to 28 wind turbines could be erected on a 3-square-mile parcel, according to Bureau of Land Management documents.
The turbines would be 410 feet tall and would run along the mountains’ ridge tops, according to a statement from 1st District Supervisor Brad Mitzelfelt.
The deadline was extended after residents expressed concerns in March that their property values would be affected, views would be lost and wildlife corridors would be blocked by roads, according to the statement.
A separate project application has been submitted to the BLM by Orion Energy Group, which is owned by the multinational energy company BP. Orion Energy wants to erect up to 36 turbines just northeast of Apple Valley on Sidewinder Mountain, according to BLM documents.
Granite Wind’s parent company is Sierra Renewables in Redlands.
Public comment will end May 5 and should be submitted to Planner Carrie Hyke in the county’s Land Use Service Department, Advance Planning Division, 385 N. Arrowhead Ave., San Bernardino.
The county and BLM entered into an agreement last month that ensures joint review of wind and solar energy projects in the High Desert.
