Rhode Island considers 1-year ban on wind power

Environmental regulators are considering a one-year ban on wind turbines and other alternative energy projects in state waters.
The Coastal Resources Management Council was scheduled Tuesday evening to hearing testimony and potentially vote on the proposed moratorium.
Gov. Don Carcieri and legislative leaders have supported building wind farms off Rhode Island to stabilize electricity prices and cut down on pollution.
But a spokeswoman for the CRMC says the state lacks rules governing wind farms. Regulators want a one-year ban so they can create a plan deciding where the windfarms could go.
Carcieri wants 15 percent of the state’s electricity to come from wind power by 2011. His spokesman has said a moratorium could complicate that goal.
