Resident suing turbine developer

Intermittent humming from a transformer station has caused numerous adverse affects, an Amaranth man claims. Paul Thompson, who lives near the station, filed a $1.25 million lawsuit last week against Canadian Hydro Developers.
“I’ve been at it for a couple of months, but I just wanted to get it all lined up,” he says of the suit, which was filed in Newmarket. “It had to be served by the 23rd of February (because of the statutes of limitations), that’s why I did it last Thursday, the 21st.”
In the suit Thompson claims the hum has caused him to lose sleep, reduced his ability to enjoy his property and, among other things, caused him to develop an aversion to anything that hums.
“It’s a nuisance claim, basically,” he says.
Thompson’s claims have not been proven in court. Representatives from Canadian Hydro couldn’t be reached for comment at press time.
Thompson’s claims are the same issues he presented at an Ontario Municipal Board hearing that wrapped up Wednesday. Canadian Hydro is seeking approval to install 22 wind turbines in Amaranth and add a second transformer. An OMB decision has yet to be rendered. It’s expected within a matter of weeks.
