FPL awarded $2.5 million state grant for wind turbine project

ST. LUCIE COUNTY – Florida Power & Light Co. was awarded $2.5 million in state grant money for its wind turbine project Tuesday, according to the state Department of Environmental Protection.

The project was one of 139 proposals seeking more than $200 million in funding. The department ultimately gave out $12.5 million to eight groups through its Renewable Energy Technologies grants, which are designed to encourage renewable energy projects involving solar, hydrogen, wind and other technologies.

“Through targeted incentives like the Renewable Energy Technologies Grant Program, Florida is stimulating economic development in the renewable and alternative energy fields,” said DEP Secretary Michael W. Sole in a statement.

FPL wants to place six turbines on its own land at the St. Lucie Nuclear Plant and three on state owned land managed by the county at Blind Creek Park. County Commission Chairman Joe Smith said the county has not set a date for the next turbine discussion, but said he expected one to occur next month.
