Steady flow for turbine inquiries

Public inquiries into wind farm schemes across Scotland are taking place at a rate of about one a month.

Figures from the Scottish Government confirm that a total of 22 developments have gone through the process in the last two years.

It equates to about 14% of all public inquiries over the same time period.

Seven further inquiries are already pending in Angus, the Borders, Highlands, North Ayrshire, Perth and Kinross and the Western Isles.

One public inquiry is currently under way at Duns in the Scottish Borders.

It has been taking place over nearly three weeks into proposals to construct 48 turbines in the Lammermuir Hills.

An inquiry was also recently confirmed into a proposal for a smaller development at Drone Hill in Berwickshire.

A spokesman for the Scottish Government said there were two reasons why such schemes would be brought to them.

Some proposals are automatically referred due to the scale of the plans.

Others are taken to appeal by developers if their projects are turned down by local councils.

Across Scotland there had been a total of 153 public inquiries held between 14 February 2006 and 14 February 2008.

Of these a total of 22 were into wind farm developments.

The largest single number were in Perth and Kinross where nine had to be staged.

Other areas with multiple inquiries were Aberdeenshire, the Borders and the Highlands.
