Gamesa decision postponed

TYRONE – Any decision on a proposed lease of Tyrone Borough watershed property to wind energy developer Gamesa won’t come until at least April.
‘‘I don’t think all council members have been to the Allegheny Ridge Wind Farm yet,’’ Mayor Jim Kilmartin said after a request by the coalition opposing the deal. Stan Kotala, president of the Juniata Valley Audubon Society, asked the council to delay the decision until after March, when a public meeting will be held to spell out reasons a wind farm on Ice Mountain would not be a good idea.
‘‘I don’t think we’ll be jumping on the vote next month,’’ Kilmartin said.
Kotala said the date for the meeting, where speakers representing multiple facets of opposition will present their cases and answer questions, isn’t nailed down, but it likely will be held on the Tyrone Area School District campus in the middle of the week.
Kotala said he and others opposing the wind turbines on Ice Mountain have ‘‘literally been bombarded’’ by people concerned about everything from the impact on migratory birds such as golden eagles and noise.
If Tyrone goes forward with the plan, Gamesa would put up to 15 wind turbines on watershed property as part of its proposed 25-turbine Sandy Ridge Wind Farm.
