MP welcomes windfarm decision

Ceredigion’s Welsh Liberal Democrat MP Mark Williams has welcomed the Planning Inspectorate’s decision to turn down an appeal by developers wishing to construct a windfarm at Rhos Garn, Ceredigion.
Mr Williams said: “I am delighted that the strength of the opposition to this development from the local community has been recognised.
“The Rhos Garn site was outside the Assembly Government’s designated area for new wind farms. The proposed turbines were likely to be 328 foot in height – that’s taller than Big Ben. Turbines this size would have had a very significant impact on the day-to-day lives of people living in Mydroilyn, Talgarreg, Gorsgoch and Dihewyd. The Inspector’s report also concluded the turbines would also have been visible across a much wider area of the County.
“This decision is a victory for common sense, and shows how essential it is that we keep a system of planning inquiries, so that both sides of the argument can be fully aired. In general terms we must generate much more of our electricity from renewable sources but it is vital we ensure that we exploit all the options we have at our disposal, including offshore wind and the full range of technologies in the Severn estuary. I remain deeply concerned about the over-reliance the Assembly are placing on large-scale onshore wind projects.”
