Belgium wind farm contracted to Electrabel

French utility Suez SA’s Belgian unit will construct Belgium’s largest wind farm.

Electrabel announced it has signed an agreement with six Belgian municipalities for the construction of the country’s largest onshore wind farm.

As part of the project, 20 turbines, each with a capacity of 2 to 3 megawatts, will be constructed; the total project is estimated to generate about 40 to 50 megawatts.

Electrabel said it must now seek planning permission. The company expects the turbines to supply annual electricity to about 40,000 households when they come online in about 2010. Electrabel did not disclose financial details.

Suez has reportedly increased electricity sales in Europe and internationally and entered into the liquefied natural gas industry. The company says it plans to continue its growth of energy-related services in France and Belgium, as well as expand its environment activities in China, Australia and North America.
