Killala windfarm plan is blown away

An Bord Pleanála has refused planning permission on appeal to a Killala-based company proposing to develop the first windfarm in Ireland to be managed and financed by the local community.
A group of local farming families operating under the name Killala Community Windfarm Ltd were granted conditional planning permission in December, 2007 for a proposed 10 turbine 25MW windfarm together with ancillary buildings and an ESB substation and all associated site works at Cloonawillin, Ballysakeery, Lisglennon, Mullafarry.
The original application had been lodged together with documentation including an Environmental Impact Statement in November 2006 and a total of 45 objections and a further five submissions of concern or support were subsequently lodged with the planning authority.
Further information of a technical nature and clarification of some of that further information was sought during the planning process. The decision by the planning authority’s senior planner to recommend the grant of planning permission was not in accordance with the recommendation of the senior executive planner.
The senior planner had concluded that the proposed development would not adversely impact the local landscape, flora, fauna, amenities or property once developers complied with the 21 conditions attached. And the application was granted on those terms.
A total of five third party appeals of this decision were subsequently lodged to An Bord Pleanala in December, 2007.
The appellants included Willie McGreal and others, Kevin Deering and Peter Crossan, Brian Carroll, Padraic Roche and Patrick O’Malley.

Mayo Power appeal result
Appellants of the decision to grant Mayo Power Ltd planning permission to construct a €140m 100MW electricity generating station on the site of the former Asahi plant in Killala may know the outcome of their cases this week.
An Bord Pleanala was scheduled to make its decision on the third party appeals by today, July 22. The developers were granted planning permission for the development subject to 43 conditions on December 21 last. The development would lead to the creation of up to 300 jobs during construction phase and 80 full-time jobs during operation. The appellants to the planning decision include An Taisce, Asahi Development Committee, Killala Community Council and Michael O’Donnell. While a decision is due today, the board has the option of deferring the matter further.
