Wind farm fears aired

Dozens of villagers concerned about plans for a wind farm near Ashby Magna attended an emergency public meeting.

London-based Broadview Energy has identified a site for a wind farm between the village and Gilmorton and is seeking planning permission for a data-gathering mast at the site.

Depending on the results, it hopes to submit a full planning application in late 2008 or early 2009.

Ashby Magna parish councillors met representatives from Broadview last week and afterwards called the meeting to speak to villagers about the plans.

Parish councillor Richard Smith said: “There were about 60 people there which I think shows the strength of feeling.

“People are generally concerned as there are a lot of issues they are unsure about. These range from the additional traffic the construction will bring and the effect it may have on health, to the noise.”

Cllr Smith disclosed that a campaign group is being set up to fight the proposals but, although it would have some input from the parish council, it could not be directly involved.

The council invited Keith Kilbane, the chairman of a campaign group fighting a wind farm application near Swinford, to speak at the meeting.

Broadview Energy has set up a website with more details about the development – which it is calling Low Spinney Wind Farm – at www.lowspinneywindfarm.co.uk.
