Wind turbines addressed

NOXEN – BP Alternative Energy has plans to place a wind turbine as part of a larger facility on land west of Route 29 known as Schooley Mountain, and that concerns township supervisors.
Carl Shook said the company, which wants to place the turbine on property owned by Joel Field, must get an okay from the township to build in a setback.
He added that the company is creating a proposal.
According to a township ordinance, wind turbines cannot be built within 500 feet of anyone’s property, without special exceptions.
The turbine proposed for Field’s property would be within 500 feet of township land.
BP is looking to have a 35-90 wind turbine facility in operation by the end of 2009 in the southwestern part of the county. The exact number of turbines to be built has not been determined, according to Shook.
Field said that he wants a turbine on his property because it is green energy and could help sustain his farm. BP would lease the land from Field.
Field added that he is not concerned about how the turbine would affect his view of the landscape from his home because other turbines would be located nearby.
Field own 135 acres of land.
The 400-foot tall turbine would be located at the peak of the 1,000-foot mountain, Field said.
On Tuesday, Shook also said that BP has indicated that it is looking at the use of Tannery Field, which is located off Main Street in Noxen as a staging area for construction of its developing turbine project.
Shook added that BP has not presented a formal proposal and that any potential damage to a baseball diamond located on the field would be repaired by BP.
Also on Tuesday, Shook said that the township is reviewing any ordinances it might have related to the Bowman’s Creek Watershed as BP has plans to use them in a stormwater mitigation plan it would create as part of an overall development.
An ordinance regulates development in a watershed and may have been adopted by Noxen Township in 2001, solicitor Ron Kamage said.
