A public inquiry to consider an appeal against South Hams Council’s refusal for three wind turbines at Goveton, near Kingsbridge, is due to be heard in October. Cornwall Light and Power is appealing against the refusal of their latest application. This slightly altered the position of the turbines from an earlier application, which was also refused. The council refused the application on the grounds of the turbines’ unacceptable impact on the area and the harm to the living conditions of the occupiers of Pasture Coombe Farm. Rosalind Spears, from the Buckland-tout-Saints Association, said: ‘It is open to the inspector to grant permission for these turbines despite the council decision. ‘So it is important for everyone to send in their comments. ‘People have a right to do this, whether or not they have written before.’ The deadline for comments is June 18, 2008. Mrs Spears said: ‘We know that if permission is given for these three huge turbines, which will not contribute much electricity to the grid, it will open the floodgates for turbines all over the South Hams. ‘It is incredible that anyone could consider putting up three structures with huge moving propellers two and half times as high as the radio mast at Halwell at the entrance to the Kingsbridge and Salcombe Estuary. ‘Visiting France recently I was shocked to see that in a group of six turbines only three were actually turning although it was a windy day. ‘I gather this is quite usual with wind farms.
