Pomfret OKs tower permit

A two-year special-use permit was issued to Babcock & Brown Renewable Holdings of Houston to erect a meteorological tower on land off Fredonia- Stockton Road.
The tower is designed to measure whether there is enough wind velocity in the area for a wind farm. A public hearing on the permit was held Wednesday night, prior to the regular meeting of the Pomfret Town Board in Town Hall. Three people attended the public hearing and no one spoke.
Supervisor Donald Steger said Babcock & Brown met all requirements of the town’s wind-energy conversion system zoning ordinance in its application. The land is owned by Steven Jusko.
In other business:
• The board voted to give engineering firm Wendel Duchscherer of Amherst permission to continue moving ahead on plans for the proposed Webster Road water district. The firm, which will be paid a maximum of $38,000, is looking at meeting deadlines of potential government funding sources that would help pay for the water system.
• Julie Schaeffer, of Webster Road, asked the board to consider updating its noise ordinance because of nuisance ATV traffic on her road.
• The Fredonia Preservation Society, using endowment money from the Northern Chautauqua Community Foundation, is proposing to erect a new sign in Forest Hill Cemetery that would include an updated map of the grounds, highlighting historic grave sites.
