Gamesa reschedules public meeting

Wind energy company Gamesa Energy USA has rescheduled a town hall meeting for Wednesday, June 20 to be held at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown.

On June 12, the company officials backed out of a meeting that was scheduled to be held in Shade Township citing concerns they would not be given enough time to present their issues.

The resulting forum was marked by opponents of Gamesa’s Shaffer Mountain Wind Farm project speaking for more than three hours to a partisan crowd.

After the meeting, organizer Larry Hutchinson, who is president of the Shade Creek Watershed Association, said the format suffered from a lack of balance.

The Wednesday meeting will feature officials presenting information about wind energy, windmill construction plans and renewable energy, Scott Tattar, a representative for Gamesa said.

After the meeting, representatives will take questions from the public, including those about projects like the Shaffer Mountain Wind Farm, he said.

The 30-turbine wind farm, which is projected to extend through parts of Shade and Ogle townships in Somerset County and Napier Township in Bedford County has been the subject of much public debate for the last six months.

Opponents of the wind facility have paid for several billboards located in the Windber area and have dedicated a Web site to stopping the permitting of the project.

The meeting will start at 7 p.m. and run to 8:30 p.m. at Heritage Hall A in the Living/Learning Center, located at 450 Schoolhouse Road, Johnstown.
