Anger over plans for 147ft turbines

Families are furious after discovering two wind turbines could be put up less than half a mile from their homes.

Residents of the Aston Lodge Park estate, in Stone, say it is ‘disgusting’ that they have been given so little time to respond to the plans.

Stafford Borough Council is required by law to give people 21 days’ notice to object to a planning application.

Notices were put up nearby, but residents say the letters arrived on doormats just two weeks before the deadline.

Robin Plumpton, aged 65, from Aston Chase, said: “The letter I received is dated September 11, but I didn’t receive it until the 18th.”

The deadline for people to send their objections is October 2.

Barry Levins, who also lives in Aston Chase, found out about the turbine proposals after being told by a neighbour.

The 69-year-old said: “It’s ridiculous that only a few people got letters from the council when it is going to affect all of us on this estate.

“Two weeks is not long enough for us to tell all the other residents, research the topic and write our objections.”

Leicestershire-based Hallmark Power has submitted an application to the council to install two 147ft (45-metre) high turbines at Stone Park Farm, off Pingle Lane.

The fields are currently used to grow cereals.

Mr Levins said: “It’s been handled very badly and that’s what upsets us the most. We don’t feel like we’ve had time to consult each other.”

Estelle Hiley, from Aston Chase, said: “No one would have known about this unless we told them and it’s not fair.”

Objectors say letters were sent only to a few residents who would see the wind turbines from their houses.

Now they have decided to distribute 600 leaflets around the estate, informing other families of the plans.

They also want the deadline to be extended so that they can put forward considered arguments against the turbines.

Mr Levins said: “It’s a big issue that will affect a lot of people. We should be consulted properly and have the chance to reply.

“We are more annoyed at the moment about the way they have handled this, than about the consequences of the plans going ahead.”

A Stafford Borough Council spokesman said: “We give three weeks for neighbour consultations – which means there are still eight days to go if people want to comment on this application.

“As well as letters, three public notices were put up on a footpath near the site alerting people to the application.

“At this moment the application has been called in to be considered by the planning committee and any comments right up to the date the decision is made would be considered.”
