Windfarm fears as turbine backed near Ellesmere

Controversial plans to create a 150ft (46m) turbine in the Shropshire countryside have been recommended for approval despite fears the area is being turned into a windfarm.

Shropshire Council’s north planning committee will meet on Tuesday to discuss the proposal to create the turbine at Kenwick Lodge Farm in Cockshutt, near Ellesmere. Applicants say the turbine will be used to provide power for their farm.

But Brian Williams, Shropshire Councillor for The Meres, said he fears the area is slowly being converted into a windfarm and requested the application be considered by the committee.

He said: “I am against this particular turbine because I think it increases the overall number to one which is making the area become virtually a windfarm.”

The council has received three letters of objection and one in support of the plans.

Those against have raised concerns of the impact it will have on the environment and tourism. Members of Cockshutt Cum Petton Parish Council have also objected after raising concerns over the size.

The letter in support says well-sited turbines pose no threat to wildlife.

At least 10 applications have been submitted for turbines in the area in the last two years. The planning meeting is on Tuesday at Edinburgh House, Wem.
