Duke Energy, some residents at odds over proposed wind farm

Duke Energy wants to harness the winds sweeping across Mason and Fleming counties by building a wind farm.
“We think we can do it to a low cost standard and have a strong focus on safety.” Duke Energy’s Graham Furlong said.
In the proposal outlined before Mason County representatives and residents Tuesday, the farm would have 25 to 100 turbines and generate between 70 and 150 megawatts of power. As a comparison, the Zimmer Generating Station across the Ohio River near Moscow can generate 1,300 megawatts.
But the utility isn’t having an easy time getting community support.
Questions about the project ranged from health concerns to the effect on livestock. Maysville Mayor David Cartmell said the biggest problem for him is aesthetics.
“It’s been likened to the ‘War of the Worlds’, where you see those long-legged things out your back window,” he said.
Duke has made some headway securing leases for land to build on, but that was also a sticking point for some audience members Tuesday.
“They have been in the area doing data collecting and lease options with farms for over a year, I mean we heard that testimony today, but citizens in the area didn’t find out until May,” Joe Pfeffer, with Citizens Voice of Mason County, said.
Duke has already erected a test apparatus in a May’s Lick field to gauge wind speeds and direction.
