Failed wind turbines in Welwyn Garden City set to be scrapped

Credit:  By Dave Burke, News Editor Thursday, September 5, 2013, whtimes.co.uk ~~

This week plans were submitted to replace the “effectively redundant” 20KW turbines with solar panels on the Tesco site in Shire Park, in Falcon Way.

Instead, the contraptions would be replaced with photovoltaic devices – one of which would be flat, while the other would be supported by a mast.

Solar panels would be built into the new contraptions to convert sun rays into electricity.

Documents handed in to Welwyn Hatfield Council said: “The existing two wind turbines currently located on the above site have not produced the expected energy due to site conditions not allowing for adequate wind flow and are effectively redundant.

“The proposal is to replace the wind turbines with photovoltaic systems which will produce far greater energy.”

According to the documents, one of the new devices – which generate electricity through solar panels – will be 13 metres by
three metres, and lie flat, while the other will be six metres by 12 metres and be supported by a mast.
