Proposed turbines exceed planning regulations – IWCM

Credit:  Leinster Express | 29/08/2013 | www.leinsterexpress.ie ~~

The proposed wind farm on the Laois/Kilkenny border exceeds the threshold set down by the planning and development regulations, according to the company overseeing wind energy projects in Ireland.

As part of Galetech Energy Developments Limited’s application to build eight turbines at Ironmills, the company have included a report from IWCM. The report shows that regulations set the threshold at five turbines, or a total output of 5 megawatts. This development has eight turbines and 22.8 megawatts. As it exceeds the threshold, an environmental impact assessment is needed.

The Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government say that an ecological survey should also be carried out in the area.

The proposed wind farm consists of eight turbines with a hub height of up to 100m and a rotor diameter of up to 103m, giving a maximum tip height of 152m. There will also be site access roads, underground cabling, and a switch room and control facility.
