Many new power lines planed

Clean Line Energy announced the route for its proposed DC power transmission line. Only about eight miles of the Rock Island line will lie in Hancock County. It will come out of Wright County about 1.5 miles southwest of Kanawha, turn west, and travel eight miles to Kossuth County, continuing west several more counties. A pubic meeting will be held August 22 in Belmond.
Meetings were held in Northwood and Lake Mills to talk about another new power line that will carry electricity from nearby windfarms. The line, smaller than the proposed 600 kilovolt (DC) Rock Island Clean Line project north of Belmond, would be constructed of single steel poles placed about 1,000 feet apart.
ITC, the company that now owns the present 68kV transmission lines to and from Belmond, is in the middle of a 17-part, 345kV (AC) power line upgrade in 11 states. The ITC upgrade includes a line from Jackson to Blue Earth, MN and then south to Ledyard, Burt and Algona. At Ledyard, another line will travel east through Winnebago County (north of Lake Mills) then turn south in Worth County (west of Northwood) and travel past Mason City on the way to Hampton. This line will eventually interconnect with a new Mid-American Energy line from Hampton to Cedar Falls. MidAmerican has also proposed a new line along Highway 18 from Sheldon to Algona and south to Fort Dodge. It will interconnect with the ITC project at a point northeast of Algona.
The ITC and MidAmerican projects will likely cross under the Rock Island Clean Lines in Kossuth and Franklin Counties.
