New windfarm action group formed – and amazing 355 turbines in planning stream in Sutherland

An action group protesting against the latest proposal for a 13 turbine wind farm on the Tressady Estate by Rogart had their first meeting this week.
David Graham spokesman for the group, called “No More Windfarms”, says: “It’s a nonsense to call these huge turbine power stations ‘farms’.
“We already have too many of them in this area. They are factories – and an ugly blight on our beautiful landscape.”
The group, which is based in the Rogart area, includes residents who, should the latest development go ahead, will be facing turbines in front and behind them. As it is, I can hear them all the time,” one member of the group reports.
With turbines at Kilbraur, Gordonbush, Lairg, and potentially at Tressady and Balnacoil, as well as other sites, No More Windfarms feels the time is right to get their message across.
“Should Tressady go ahead, there will be families sandwiched between the turbines of Kilbraur and the new 115 metre high monstrosities being proposed,” says Graham.
The group has been encouraged by a recent “victory” against windfarm development at Kiltarlity and believe there’s a growing swell of public opinion against ongoing developments in the area.
n Sutherland already has eight operational windfarms with a total of 122 turbines.
And north planners have given consent for another wind farm at Strathy North comprising 33 turbines.
But these figures pale in comparison to what is in the pipeline.
Plans have been mooted for another 15 windfarms across the county, with a total of 355 turbines.
Highland councillors will be updated next week on all major developments including windfarms planned across the north.
The north planning applications committee will be informed of the progress of the
applications and the timescale for their completion.
Planning applications for seven of the 15 potential new windfarms in Sutherland have already been submitted but not yet determined.
These are at Strathy South, Strathy; Braemore, Lairg; Glenmorie, Bonar Bridge; Sallachy, Lairg; Dalnessie, Lairg; Glencassley, Lairg; and Tressady, Rogart.
Another eight windfarms still at the scoping stage are: Melvich; Ackran, Melvich; Durness; Crakaig; Strathy Wood; Balnacoil, Strath Brora; Creag Riabhach, Lairg, and West Garty Estate, Helmsdale.
