Minnesota regulators give proposed Goodhue wind farm a deadline

The Minnesota Public Utilities Commission has ordered the company behind a proposed wind farm in Goodhue County to surrender its permit to build by Aug. 9, or give notice that it intends to move forward with construction.

In an order filed on Friday, the PUC threatened to revoke the permit if the company, New Era Wind Farm, does not comply with the order within 14 days.

If New Era gives notice that it intends to move forward with the project, it must demonstrate that it is capable of beginning construction by its original Aug. 23 deadline.

On Wednesday, Xcel Energy, the state’s largest utility, submitted a letter to the PUC saying the company had reached a settlement with New Era to terminate the power purchase agreements between the two companies, leaving New Era without a buyer for the electricity its farm would generate.
