Wind project seeks OK from N.S.

The developer of an Eastern Shore wind project has asked the Environment Department to approve the venture.
Natural Forces Wind Inc. registered its Gaetz Brook Wind Farm with the province on Wednesday.
The 2.3-megawatt project will have a single turbine.
Andy MacCallum, Natural Forces’ vice-president of development, said the Halifax-based company hopes the project will get the green light by early September.
“When we start a site-finding process, we do a fair amount of screening to ensure the sites that we do choose are in areas that have low environmental sensitivities,” he said in an interview.
The turbine will be located near an industrial park and Highway 107, with the nearest home being about one kilometre away, MacCallum said.
The public can comment on the project until Aug. 16. Environment Minister Sterling Belliveau has until Sept. 5 to rule on the proposal.
According to an assessment report by the company, the project isn’t expected to have a significant effect on the environment.
Natural Forces plans to begin construction this fall and have the turbine operational by late spring.
The Gaetz Brooke venture will sell electricity to Nova Scotia Power at a fixed rate for 20 years.
The project is a partnership between Wind4All Communities Inc., a community economic development investment fund, and Natural Forces Wind.
The investment fund, which is comprised of local investors, is the majority owner.
