More health info needed on wind turbines, mayor says

MINTO – Minto council has put their support behind a Township of Centre Wellington resolution as an unwilling host for industrial wind turbine projects.
The discussion was held at the July 2 meeting of Minto council, where the resolution from Centre Wellington requested a moratorium on wind energy projects until an independent third party health study has been completed, and that the township is not a willing host. Coun. Ron Faulkner said it’s too early to take a stance on hosting wind turbines, and that developments down the road may cause council to reconsider their position.
“That’s why I think we have to be really, really cautious before we make a true commitment, one way or the other,” Faulkner said.
Coun. Mary Lou Colwell agreed with Faulkner, and that council shouldn’t totally write the idea off of hosting industrial wind turbines. Coun. Ron Elliott questioned why council should be looking at making a decision when there hasn’t been any interest expressed by wind developers, but Deputy Mayor Terry Fisk said that based on experiences in other municipalities, it may be too late to discuss if it reaches that point.
“By the time it does come to council and the council is aware of it, they’ve already got 45 or 50 properties leased,” Fisk said. “I don’t think we need to wait until we hear, by the time we hear that they’ll be here in a big way.”
Mayor George Bridge said supporting the Centre Wellington resolution is one way to send a message to the province that lower tiers would like some input in wind energy projects, and that a health study on wind turbines is overdue.
“Let’s just get it out in the open and find out if there is a health issue,” Bridge said. “We’re not a willing host until we see something about health issues.”
Minto council voted to support the Centre Wellington resolution.
