Auburn in the home stretch for meteorological tower installation

AUBURN, Mass. – Town Planner Adam Burney anticipates the installation of Auburn’s meteorological tower on the town property behind Home Depot and BJ’s will be complete within a month.
The implementation of the meteorological tower is a critical step towards the Wind Turbine and Alternative Energy Committee’s goal to install a permanent wind turbine in town.
The meteorological tower is 50 meters tall and will consist of a weather station and anemometer to measure climate data and wind speeds in the Auburn area. The project, funded by the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center will provide data and information for a 12-month feasibility study, which will determine the possible installation of a permanent wind turbine on the site.
In January 2010, the town received $85,000 in grants from the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center to test for wind power. In February 2010, the project was supported by State Rep. Paul Frost, U.S. Rep. James McGovern, and State Sen. Michael Moore.
Recently, the Town of Auburn received the access license agreement from the Home Depot Corporation to install the “met tower”. The license agreement allows the town’s contractors to pass through Home Depot’s parking lot to access to the town’s land and install the tower.
“We are in the process of clearing some trees,” Burney said, “this is the home stretch.”
He anticipates the tower will be installed and actively collecting data within a month.
