Mast to test Guernsey's wind power

Credit:  BBC News, www.bbc.co.uk 5 May 2011 ~~

The potential of wind power around Guernsey’s coast is due to be tested

Plans have been submitted for a temporary measurement mast to assess the strength of the wind around Guernsey.

It is part of a study to assess if its power could be harnessed to create electricity through wind farms.

Dr Andrew Casebow, agriculture and environment advisor for the States, said if approved it would give an idea of the technology’s potential.

He said all the options for future energy generation had to explored.

Dr Casebow said: “Apparently we’re as windy here as it is in the North Sea, where all the big wind farms are sited at the present time so we need to find out whether that’s true or not.

“Companies are developing these different kinds of technology, but we don’t know which one is going to be the winner.

“We don’t know which one will be the most efficient or produce electricity we can use here in Guernsey best and cheapest in the future.

“In a few years time we’ll really be able to take the plunge but we mustn’t delay too long we must basically be ready… we must make sure we get aboard and don’t miss the boat.”
