Echo readers bitterly divided by scheme to build windfarm in city

The prospect of a city windfarm in Cardiff has provoked a bitter row among Echo readers.
Last week, we revealed the council was considering proposals to install turbines in Tremorfa.
The plans ““ which are at the earliest stage ““ would involve a small number of turbines to generate power and could be built by the local authority.
On icwales.co.uk/echo, “Bob10″ argued that this would be a waste of time.
He wrote: “Unfortunately, wind farms are not doing any good for the environment nor are they cost effective.
“Factor in the amount of trees, undergrowth and grass lost in putting these turbines in and you actually increase the carbon footprint not decrease it.”
Ed Crowe wrote: “Shall we poll the people of Cardiff to see if they would be happy with a nuclear plant in the Bay?
“Most of them are blissfully unaware of how close they are to nuclear power stations.
“But would they want one on their doorstep? Given a choice between a nuclear plant in Y Bae or a windfarm on the local hill tops, which option do you think the people of Cardiff would take?”
“Tito” replied: “If they value their own safety, they would choose nuclear. Nuclear stations would be more inland anyway.”
“CSUKR” asked: “Simple question Ed, would you have a turbine near your home ““ with all the attendant problems of
Decimation of wild birds.
Increase in rodent population (feeding on dead birds).
Noise pollution.
Seizures induced by the strobe effect of the rotating blades.
Low frequency vibrations caused by the rotation that induces migraines.
Access roads for construction.
Pollution of the ground water from leaks of lubricating oil.
Blighted view of some of the most scenic country in the world.”
Bob replied: “The simple fact is you could not power Cardiff with windmills.”
And “Cat” wrote: “Windfarms are a huge con. The developers and proponents of windfarms rely on the public’s fear of global warming and the waning of fossil fuels.”
But “MH” backed up Ed Crowe, saying: “Wales is perfectly placed to get the maximum benefit from these renewable sources.”
