HOPKINTON —
EMC Corp. has won a $44,000 state grant to study whether it’s feasible for the company to place two wind turbines on its private South Street sewage treatment plant.
The money was awarded today by the quasi-public Massachusetts Clean Energy Center, part of $700,000 in grants for seven wind projects proposed by companies, towns, schools and a non-profit ski area.
EMC plans to work with Southborough consultant Beals and Thomas to erect a 50-meter testing tower to gauge wind data, hoping to later install two turbines producing 900 to 2,000 kilowatts of electricity. The project will also look at financial viability, environmental impact and noise.
The energy center’s Commonwealth Wind Community Scale program supports projects designed to generate at least 100 kilowatts and is funded through a charge paid by utility company customers and participating municipal power and light companies. Another program supports smaller projects for farms, homes and small businesses.
Gov. Deval Patrick wants the state to generate 2,000 megawatts from wind by 2020.
