Wind turbine plan turned down

A plan to build a 280ft wind turbine near Lochwinnoch has been rejected by Renfrewshire Council.

The council’s planning board unanimously accepted the recommendations of town planners to turn down the proposal following fears it could affect the safety of flights out of Glasgow and Prestwick airports.

Developer Green Cat Renewables Ltd, acting on behalf of Tom Coakley of Glenlora Estate, applied for permission to build an 800kW turbine on the estate, just over a mile west of Lochwinnoch.

But the proposal attracted 264 letters of objection, including one from BAA, the airports authority, which warned the plan would impact on the “safe functioning” of air traffic control.

A report on the plan to Renfrewshire Council’s planning board revealed BAA had raised concerns the turbine would affect take-off procedures and could impact on the “safe functioning of air traffic control”.

The report also said the turbine had the potential to disrupt television reception for 2330 homes near the proposed site.

Lochwinnoch Community Council had also raised fears the turbine would disturb wildlife.

Chris Gould, community council chairman, said: “The council has seen sense and gone with the general feeling that it is not a good idea.

“We held a public meeting to discuss this and everybody was against it.”

Green Cat Renewables, which is based in Biggar, South Lanarkshire, declined to comment.
