Lowell project out of scale, unjustified

Credit:  Burlington Free Press, www.burlingtonfreepress.com 1 March 2011 ~~

As someone who has tried to be informed and educated about wind energy in Vermont, I was struck by Gov. Shumlin’s talk on VPR’s Vermont Edition on Feb. 11. Three direct quotes from him follow:

1. We care about our Green Mountains.

2. We don’t have an energy policy.

3. Vermont needs a comprehensive energy plan.

All of these underline the urgency to turn down the Lowell Wind Project.

Much greater study is needed to incorporate this into a comprehensive energy plan with established policy rather than rushing this project through the hearing process to meet the tax incentive deadline for this profit driven project. If “we care about the Green Mountains,” this project is the opposite in that it devastates a ridge which is millions of years old, wildlife habitat, the pristine beauty of our landscape, recreation, the health and well being of those living nearby, and so much more.

The Lowell wind project is totally out of scale and will not produce enough energy to justify the ruin that will follow. No such projects should be allowed until Vermont does establish a comprehensive energy plan.
